Ahead of the Anniversary of Trump’s “Big Ugly Bill,” Pappas Reaffirms Commitment to Lowering Health Care Costs, Protecting Food Assistance

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump signing the Big Ugly Bill into law, which made the largest cut to health care in American history to fund billions in tax breaks to the ultrawealthy and handouts to Big Pharma and Big Oil. New Hampshire has been particularly hard-hit by the impacts of the Big Ugly Bill which cut Medicaid and food assistance for thousands of Granite Staters. Chris Pappas is fighting to roll back these cuts and lower the cost of health care, groceries and everyday essentials for New Hampshire.

“One year ago, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans forced through their Big Ugly Bill and now Granite Staters are paying the price,” said Congressman Chris Pappas. “New Hampshire families shouldn’t have to go hungry or pay higher health care premiums so corporate special interests and billionaires can get handouts and tax breaks. While my Republican opponents double down on Trump’s policies that are making life more expensive, I’m fighting to restore funding for Medicaid and SNAP and to lower costs for Granite Staters.”

Pappas’s Republican opponents, Scott Brown and John Sununu, have thrown their full support behind Trump’s Big Ugly Bill despite the fact that because of the bill:

  • More than 17,000 Granite Staters lost health care coverage through Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with further loss of coverage expected in coming years;
  • On average, premiums nearly doubled for Granite Staters receiving ACA tax credits;

Chris Pappas is fighting to make health care more affordable and to reverse the Trump Administration’s health care cuts that are raising premiums and causing millions to lose their insurance. He’s pushing to strengthen the Affordable Care Act by making tax credits permanent and he’s fighting to expand access to telehealth, cut red tape for small businesses and families seeking coverage, and ensure veterans receive the care they’ve earned.

Chris knows that seniors, veterans, parents, and children deserve affordable groceries. He’s fighting to restore funding for SNAP and pushing to roll back the Trump Administration’s blanket tariffs driving up costs. After Trump launched his reckless war of choice in Iran, Pappas called for a suspension of the federal gas tax to lower fuel and transportation costs driving up prices.

He is also fighting to deliver permanent tax relief to working people. Trump’s Big Ugly Bill made tax deductions for the ultra-wealthy and large corporations permanent while giving only temporary tax relief to tipped workers. Pappas supports making no tax on tips permanent and has backed the No Tax On Tips Act, which establishes a permanent tax deduction of up to $25,000 for tips earned by workers in professions “for which tipping is customary.”
