WMUR: After “Spearheading” Efforts to Privatize Social Security, John Sununu is “Willing to do it Again”
MANCHESTER, N.H. — A new report from WMUR highlights how Trump-backed Senate candidate John Sununu, who “helped lead the charge” to privatize Social Security when last in office, told voters he was “willing to do it before” and is “willing to do it again.”
SUNUNU: “It’s like the younger generations that are going to bear the biggest burden of failing to deal with the issues of Medicare solvency and Social Security. I’ll tell you a couple things. One, I was willing to do it before. I’m willing to do it again.”
When he was last in the Senate, Sununu was a “leading figure in the effort” to privatize Social Security. He repeatedly introduced legislation to privatize Social Security that would have exposed Granite Staters’ retirement savings to stock market crashes and lined Wall Street’s pockets, and he co-sponsored legislation that had been projected to accelerate the timeline of Social Security’s insolvency. Sununu touted his past plan to privatize Social Security last month.
SEXTON: “But do you still support privatization though?”
SUNUNU: “As I said, that was twenty years ago Adam. And if we had passed that bill, if we had passed that bill, the system would be solvent today.”
Sununu also supports Donald Trump’s Big Ugly Bill that has sped up Social Security’s insolvency timeline, threatening the benefits that hundreds of thousands of Granite Staters rely on. Trump’s own Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, characterized a provision in the bill as a “backdoor for privatizing Social Security.”
Congressman Chris Pappas has made clear that he will always fight to protect and strengthen Social Security and will never vote to cut benefits or move the goalposts for New Hampshire seniors.
Pappas cosponsored and helped pass the Social Security Fairness Act, which repealed provisions that reduced Social Security benefits for certain public-sector workers. He has opposed efforts to undermine Social Security and has pledged to protect the benefits New Hampshire seniors have earned. Pappas also recently signed a bicameral letter urging the majority in Congress to protect Social Security.
John Sununu’s record shows that he led efforts to privatize Social Security before, and now he’s making it clear that he would do it again. Chris Pappas is the only candidate in this race who will preserve those benefits for hardworking Granite Staters. While John Sununu is fighting for Donald Trump and Wall Street, Chris Pappas is fighting for New Hampshire.
