ICYMI: WMUR Highlights Pappas’s Fight to Cut Taxes, Slash Costs at Gas Pump

MANCHESTER, N.H. — In case you missed it, WMUR highlighted Congressman Chris Pappas’s efforts to lower costs for Granite Staters by fighting to suspend the national gas tax. The Gas Prices Relief Act of 2026 would suspend the federal gas tax through October, providing immediate and desperately needed relief for Granite Staters already struggling to afford everyday essentials.

As Donald Trump’s reckless war of choice with Iran and chaotic tariff policies send global markets into turmoil and drive up prices from the gas pump to the grocery store, Chris is focused on delivering relief for Granite Staters. While John Sununu and Scott Brown rubber-stamp Trump’s disastrous and costly agenda, Chris is fighting to lower costs, cut taxes, and put money back in people’s pockets.

WMUR: Several states pause gas tax amid rising prices; New Hampshire not expected to follow

By Ricky Podgorski, 5/7/2026

  • States across the country are feeling the impact of rising gas prices.
  • In the past week, the national average price for a gallon of regular gas rose more than 30 cents, including in New Hampshire.
  • To provide relief at the pump, a handful of states have suspended their gas taxes. […]

  • Rep. Chris Pappas is taking a different approach, pushing for action at the federal level.
  • He introduced the Gas Prices Relief Act of 2026 in Congress in March, a bill that would pause the 18-cent-per-gallon federal gas tax through Oct. 1.
  • On the day Pappas introduced the bill in the House, gas prices were $3.98 per gallon. As of Wednesday, a little more than a month later, the national average is more than $4.50.
  • “We are near record highs in New Hampshire right now,” Pappas said. “This is unsustainable for working families who are paying too much across the board for everything they need, from housing to health care to child care. So any way that we can bring relief, we should absolutely, you know, work to do that.”
  • In 2022, Pappas co-sponsored a similar bill after the war in Ukraine began, but it stalled in Congress.
  • That same year, New Hampshire lawmakers considered a rebate for vehicle registrations but did not pursue a gas tax suspension.
  • States including Georgia, Indiana and Utah have implemented temporary gas tax holidays, while others are still considering options.
