Chris Pappas for Senate’s Tax Cuts and Lower Costs Blueprint Spotlights Efforts to Make Housing Affordable

Pappas is Working to Bring Down Costs, Increase Housing Supply, and Make Housing More Affordable for Granite Staters

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Today, Congressman Chris Pappas’s campaign for U.S. Senate is rolling out the fifth plank of its Tax Cuts and Lower Costs Blueprint for New Hampshire to tackle the Republicans’ affordability crisis and address the rising cost of housing.

Average home prices are soaring to record highs while working families are being routinely priced out of rental units. That’s why Chris is fighting to tackle the housing crisis, lower costs for Granite Staters, and put homeownership back within reach for everyone.

“New Hampshire is facing a crisis-level housing shortage. When I speak to young Granite Staters, homeownership feels like a far-off dream. When I speak with renters and homeowners they’re worried about being priced out of communities they’ve lived in for decades,” said Congressman Chris Pappas. “Homes should be owned by Granite Staters, not Wall Street firms that squeeze working families for every dollar they can. I’m fighting to cut red tape to make it easier to build new units and I’ll work to make building materials more affordable for local businesses so we can increase housing supply and keep costs down.”

Supporting First Time Homebuyers & Current Homeowners

Homeownership shouldn’t be a far off dream but for many first-time homebuyers the upfront costs are insurmountable. That’s why Chris supports the First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit Act, which would give first time homebuyers a tax cut to help them afford a down payment.

Chris is also a lead sponsor of the Property Improvement and Manufactured Housing Loan Act which would increase loan limits for manufactured housing and allow property improvement loans to be used for constructing accessory dwelling units. Chris knows that we need to tackle housing from every angle and he’s fighting both to build new units and to help families afford essential improvements and repairs that allow them to remain in their existing homes.

Creating More Housing Supply & Cutting Red Tape

Addressing New Hampshire’s housing shortage will require adding nearly 90,000 units in the coming years. That’s why Chris is backing legislation to support homebuilders, cut red tape, and add desperately needed units to increase the supply of housing and bring down costs.

Chris is an original co-sponsor of the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act, bipartisan legislation to help build and restore affordable housing across the country by expanding the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. Chris’s Accelerating Home Building Act — bipartisan, bicameral legislation to support local governments in speeding up the permitting and home building process — would cut unnecessary red tape making it harder for homebuilders to build the new units our communities desperately need.

He is also leading legislation to lower the cost of building new housing developments by establishing a grant program to reduce building project costs and speed the development of new housing.

Ending Veteran Homelessness

New Hampshire is proudly home to nearly 90,000 veterans and their families. Chris is fighting to ensure our heroes receive the services, support, and respect they have earned, because no one who has served our country should be left on the streets.

He stood up to the Trump Administration when it terminated the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program — a “last-resort” option for veterans and their family members facing foreclosure on VA-backed loans. Pappas will continue to hold the Trump Administration accountable to keep as many veterans in their homes as possible.

Chris is fighting to expand access to homeownership for those who’ve served and introduced legislation to better inform veterans of opportunities provided by the VA Home Loan program so that they can access the benefits they’ve earned.

In January, Chris Pappas for Senate launched its Tax Cuts and Lower Costs Blueprint, where Pappas outlined his efforts to address rising energy costs in New Hampshire. In February, the campaign highlighted what Pappas is doing to tackle the health care affordability crisis, and in March the campaign spotlighted how Pappas is fighting to lower grocery costs for Granite State families. In April, the campaign discussed how Pappas is working to lower child care costs and expand access for working families across New Hampshire.

This month, the campaign is focused on how Chris Pappas is working to tackle the affordable housing crisis. The campaign will continue showcasing how, in the U.S. Senate, Chris Pappas will work with anyone to deliver for New Hampshire and he will take on anyone who makes it harder for Granite Staters to get ahead.
