As Congressman Chris Pappas Files to Run for U.S. Senate, Here Are the Five Things You Need to Know About the NH Senate Race

MANCHESTER, N.H. — On Monday, Congressman Chris Pappas will file to run for the U. S. Senate with the New Hampshire Secretary of State. Ahead of filing, here are the five things you need to know about the New Hampshire Senate race:

1. Congressman Pappas is Fighting to Lower Costs

While the Trump Administration’s costly tariffs and war of choice in Iran drive up costs on everything from gas to groceries, Chris Pappas is fighting to lower costs for Granite Staters.

Pappas is leading efforts to suspend the federal gas tax and provide immediate relief at the pump. He’s fighting to roll back the Trump Administration’s costly tariffs that are raising prices for families — costing Granite State households an additional $1,700 on average last year alone — and he’s fighting to make sure refunds for illegal tariffs enforced by the Trump Administration go to the small businesses bearing the brunt of these costs.

Earlier this year, Chris Pappas for Senate rolled-out its Tax Cuts and Lower Costs Blueprint for New Hampshire — a plan to tackle the most pressing economic issues facing Granite Staters, from lowering utility costs for families to making housing more affordable.

2. Congressman Pappas is Taking on Corruption in Washington.

Chris Pappas knows the system is rigged against people and in favor of corporate special interests, dark money groups, and entrenched politicians. Pappas refuses to take corporate PAC money, broke with Democratic House leadership to support a stock trading ban, and consistently leads efforts in Congress to ban members from trading stocks.

Pappas led the successful effort to demand a House investigation into corruption and insider trading occurring on prediction markets and he supports a ban on members of Congress and government employees from trading on political prediction markets when they have or could easily get inside information through their jobs. For Pappas, representing Granite Staters in Congress will always be about public service, not self-service.

3. Congressman Pappas is Delivering for New Hampshire.

Chris Pappas has a proven track record of taking on the big fights – from battling Big Pharma to lower prescription drug prices for seniors to facing off with predatory companies that target veterans, Pappas delivers for New Hampshire. A pragmatic dealmaker, Pappas was named one of the most effective members of Congress by the Center for Effective Lawmaking.

He worked across the aisle to pass the most significant investment in America’s infrastructure in a generation, which is helping rebuild New Hampshire’s roads and bridges, connect schools, homes, and businesses with high-speed broadband, and upgrade water and sewer infrastructure. He led a provision that is now law to permanently classify fentanyl as a Schedule 1 drug, ensuring that law enforcement has the tools they need to keep these drugs off our streets.

A tireless advocate for our nation’s veterans, Pappas helped craft and pass the PACT Act, which is the largest expansion of VA health care in a generation and allowed 3.5 million veterans exposed to toxic substances to access the care they needed, including thousands of New Hampshire veterans. He wrote legislation that was signed into law to cut red tape and eliminate bureaucratic barriers at the VA to ensure the survivors of recently deceased veterans receive benefits they’re owed, and continues to advocate for building the long overdue full service VA hospital in Manchester.

4. The GOP Senate Candidates Support Trump’s War with Iran, Costly Tariffs.

Pappas’s Republican opponents, John Sununu and Scott Brown, are running to be the latest rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s agenda and sell New Hampshire out to their corporate special interest backers — and both are completely out of touch with Granite Staters.

Sununu backs Trump’s costly tariffs, saying, “I completely understand what [Trump’s] trying to accomplish,” and claiming their economic impact “has been very modest, certainly hasn’t impacted inflation directly in any significant way.” He’s also “cheering on” Trump’s war with Iran and downplaying high gas prices, saying  “I think it’s a step in the right direction” as the war boosts his investments in Big Oil companies like Exxon Mobil and Shell, and his campaign has received tens of thousands of dollars in contributions from the industry.

Brown also supports Trump’s tariffs, calling them a “great” and “amazing idea,” and “very, very important.” Brown supported Trump’s war with Iran as it raises gas prices, even after admitting he’s paid twice as much as before to fill up his truck with gas.

5. John Sununu is Running for Senate to Push Trump’s Agenda and Protect the GOP’s “Gains.”

John Sununu has made it clear that his campaign isn’t about putting New Hampshire first — it’s about proving his loyalty to Donald Trump.

Sununu called New Hampshire’s Senate race “important to President Trump’s agenda and to the successes that have been made in Washington,” and said, “We need to protect those gains that the President and this Congress has made on such important issues.”

Following Trump’s endorsement, Sununu could not even name a single instance where he disagrees with Trump and has said he would “absolutely” campaign with Trump if he visits New Hampshire.
