Union Leader: Donna Soucy: The wins behind Pappas’s Senate bid
- When Rep. Chris Pappas arrived at the State House last week to officially file his candidacy for U.S. Senate, he was greeted by supporters who lined the halls cheering him on. Among the crowd were veterans, parents, community activists, labor leaders, and Granite Staters who showed up for Chris because they know that every day, in Washington and right here in New Hampshire, Chris shows up for them.
- In Congress, Chris has taken on some of the biggest fights of the moment — and he’s delivered for New Hampshire.
- One of the most important issues that Chris continues to work on is serving New Hampshire’s veterans and military families. He authored the Faster Payments to Veterans’ Survivors Act, which was signed into law and will help streamline support from the Veterans Administration to the families of veterans who have passed away.
- Chris also helped craft and fought to pass the PACT Act, the largest expansion of VA health care in a generation that became law in 2022. This critical legislation helped 3.5 million veterans who had been exposed to toxic substances, including thousands of New Hampshire veterans that have accessed new health care and benefits thanks to this law. And today, Chris continues to be a champion for the long overdue full-service VA hospital in Manchester.
- While far too many Granite State families have been affected by the substance use epidemic, New Hampshire is finally making progress, and Chris worked across the aisle and led the fight in Congress to permanently classify fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs. Because of Chris’ provision in the HALT Fentanyl Act, which was signed into law last year, New Hampshire law enforcement has the tools to continue cracking down on drug traffickers and keep these drugs off our streets.
- In New Hampshire, we want our leaders to make things work better and to make our lives easier. In towns and cities across the state you’ll find projects backed by Chris Pappas doing just that. From Sandwich and Grafton County, where students and workers can now access high-speed internet, to the campus of Saint Anselm College, where the next generation of Granite State nurses are being trained, to the Seacoast, where a new bridge is being built to connect Hampton and Seabrook, Chris has secured funding for New Hampshire that is making a real difference in people’s lives.
- In an era of polarized and divided politics, Granite Staters know that with Chris Pappas on their side, New Hampshire will always come first. He’s unafraid to stand up to his own party to do what is right for New Hampshire and he’ll fight like hell to take on anyone making it harder for Granite Staters to get by.
- From taking on Big Pharma to cap insulin costs at $35 per month and allowing Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for seniors, to helping pass a middle-class tax cut for New Hampshire families, Chris has demonstrated time and again that he’ll work with anyone to make life better for Granite Staters, and he’ll take on anyone who is getting in the way of progress.
- The same cannot be said for his likely Republican opponent, John Sununu — no matter how hard Sununu tries to spin his record. Sununu recently said that New Hampshire’s Senate race is “important to President Trump’s agenda and to the successes that have been made in Washington.” He didn’t say this race is important to Granite Staters, to hardworking families, our seniors or our veterans. Sununu said the quiet part out loud — he’s in this race to fight for Donald Trump’s agenda, which he personally profits from. He’s not in it to fight for us.
- The contrast between Sununu’s self-service and Pappas’s record of fighting for New Hampshire couldn’t be starker. With filing season kicking off the unofficial final stretch of this highly contested U.S. Senate race, Granite Staters from all walks of life know they have a proven fighter who delivers for our state in Chris Pappas.
